Private Guided Tours of Cerne Abbey, Led by the Owning Family
Unlike a standard tourist attraction or museum visit, tours at Cerne Abbey are private, personal and guided by the owning family.
Guests are taken through hidden corners of the estate, its medieval buildings and the stories connected to over 1,000 years of history, architecture and archaeological discovery.

Exclusive Access Beyond the Public Route
Private tours include access to areas not normally open to general visitors, including all three floors of the medieval Abbot's Porch.
Guests may also visit the Guest House, parts of the main house, the studio, pond garden and the sites connected to recent archaeological work known as “The Dig”.
The route can also include St Augustine's Well and the wider village by arrangement.

Private Estate Atmosphere
Unlike a traditional tourist attraction or museum experience, Cerne Abbey offers a more personal and immersive way to explore English heritage within a privately owned historic estate.
The combination of medieval buildings, hidden spaces, archaeology and the surrounding Dorset countryside creates an atmosphere centred around history, storytelling and discovery.
What the Tour Includes

The Dig
Recent excavations at Cerne Abbey are continuing to reveal new details about the lost monastery buried beneath the grounds.
Tours include the story behind “The Dig”, recent discoveries and the evolving understanding of the abbey's original scale, buildings and Anglo-Saxon origins.
This connection between living history and ongoing archaeology creates an experience unlike a conventional heritage visit.

Group Visits & Coach Tours
Cerne Abbey welcomes private group visits for groups of 8 to 65 guests.
The experience is well suited to coach tour operators, cruise ship excursions, heritage societies, educational groups and private travel organisers looking for an authentic English heritage visit in Dorset.
Coach access is available by arrangement via Kettle Bridge Lane, with tea, coffee and cakes included as part of the visit.
Cruise Excursions
Cerne Abbey can form part of a private Dorset heritage excursion for cruise guests, combining the abbey, Cerne Abbas village, the Cerne Abbas Giant and refreshments within the estate grounds.
Tours typically last between 90 minutes and 2 hours, with refreshments included.

Authentic English Heritage
Cerne Abbey offers a rare opportunity to experience a privately owned historic estate in a more personal and atmospheric way.
Rather than a large commercial attraction, the experience feels closer to being welcomed into a hidden part of English history, surrounded by architecture, stories and landscapes that have remained connected to the estate for centuries.
Bespoke & Evening Tours
Private evening tours, tailored group visits and bespoke heritage experiences can be arranged by enquiry.
Tours may include additional focus on archaeology, monastic history, village heritage or extended refreshments within the estate grounds.
