Beyond the Public Route
A private tour takes you into parts of the estate that are normally closed to the public. That includes all three floors of the medieval Abbot's Porch and two rooms in the main house: the East Hall, home to Abbot Vanne's original fireplace, carved with his crest and brought here from the abbey's Guest House, and the Red Room, where you can still see the original abbey gate hinges dating back to the 900s.
The Guest House and the grounds are part of the tour too, and St Augustine's Well and the wider village can be added by arrangement.

Private tours for smaller groups start from £50 per person, including the tour and refreshments. Group, coach and cruise rates are arranged to suit the size of your visit.

Refreshments are included with every tour. Depending on your time slot, that is either morning coffee and cake or afternoon tea and cake, all homemade, and served outside in the Monument courtyard at the heart of the abbey.
It is a lovely spot to sit with a slice of cake and take the place in.

We are glad to welcome societies, clubs and community groups, from local history societies and interest groups to garden clubs and beyond, whether you are based in Poundbury, Sherborne, Dorchester or further across the South West.
A visit can include an owner-led tour of the abbey and, if your group would like, a short talk on its thousand years of history. Groups of eight to sixty-five are welcome. The tour is largely indoors whatever the forecast, with toilets on site.

We welcome coach groups and tour operators, with private parking on site and coaches arriving via Kettle Bridge Lane, avoiding the narrow village streets. Refreshments are included. What Else to See in Cerne Abbas
The tour is just part of a day here. Cerne Abbas is a beautiful village, and there is plenty more to see nearby, all free to enjoy and most within a few minutes' walk. None of these are part of the tour, but we always recommend taking time to explore them while you are here.
- The Cerne Abbas Giant, the famous chalk hill figure, a five to ten minute walk away and managed by the National Trust.
- St Augustine's Well, a lesser-known and peaceful spot, about 100 metres away.
- The site of the recent abbey dig, around 50 metres away in Beauvoir field. The excavation is seasonal, so there is not always something to see, but it is the spot where the dig has been taking place.
- St Mary's Church, about 150 metres away, with its medieval features.
- The village itself, with three pubs, a village shop and the Old Saddler, all a short stroll away.
